WHY WOULD PETER DO THAT?
Galatians 2:11-21

Pastor Terry Wilcox

  1. What Peter did.
    Galatians 2:11-13
    a. Previously agreed with Paul
         Acts 15:5-11
    b. Had been given a vision.
         Acts 10:9-16
  2. Why?
    Galatians 2:12
    Proverbs 29:25

    Two results of Peter’s actions:
    I.  It made him a hypocrite
    II. Influenced others toward legalism.

  3. Biblical truths (doctrines) Peter violated.
    a. Justification by faith.
        Galatians 2:16
        Romans 3:21-26
    b. Unity of the Body of Christ
        Galatians 3:28
    c. Freedom from the law.
        Galatians 2:17-21

Two great “pushers” to return to the law:
        I.  Fear – the remedy?
            Lamentations 12:4-5
        II. Pride
            I Peter 5:5-6
            James 4:6
Today, as in Paul’s day, people embrace God’s grace for salvation and then are tempted to gravitate toward the false security of legalism.

  4. This does not lead to cheap grace, but to the power and partnership of the Holy Spirit.
    Galatians 2:20

When we surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Christ, our will becomes dominated by the “mind of Christ.”
    Romans 6:3-7

Replace your vision of yourself with His.
Replace your “want to” with His “will do.”
