Matthew 5:13-16

- Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.” In the Bible, light is used as a symbol of holiness, goodness, knowledge, grace, hope, and God’s revelation.
I believe Jesus’ use of salt and light are metaphors for influence.
Both Matthew 5:13 and Matthew 5:14 begin with you.
We are to influence this world for the glory of God.
These four verses summarize our function.
I Peter 2:9 - The presupposition of Jesus’ announcement is that the world is full of corruption and darkness.

Only God changes the human heart! - Salt: a metaphor for integrity.
Salt adds flavor, fights corruption, creates thirst, may cause pain, contributes value, and preserves life. - “You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14
Light dispels darkness
Light reveals danger
Light is necessary for lifeLight gives direction
Light makes movement possibleJesus alludes to risk:
· Salt
Exposed to elements or separated
· Light
Can be obscured or hidden
