Psalm 23
When the Lord is your shepherd, his love surrounds you now and forever.
The love of “The Good Shepherd” is a love that pursues, and a love that welcomes.
- Love that pursues – Psalm 23:6
The author, David, had a life plagued with trouble.
I believe Psalm 23 was and is an exercise of faith.A Scottish shepherd preached on this verse and pictured: a shepherd ahead of the flock and two dogs behind:
- Goodness = God giving us what we don’t merit.
James 1:17
“God is too good to be unkind, He is too wise to be confused. If I cannot trace his hand, I can always trust his heart.” C.H. Spurgeon - Mercy = God not giving us what we deserve.
John 3:17-18His mercy is to lead us to repentance.
Romans 2:4All of Psalm 23 reveals God’s purpose: to bring us into His house forever.
- We are surrounded by His love.
Psalm 139:5There is an ancient Celtic hymn attributed to St. Patrick in the 5th century. It begins with these words:
“I bind unto myself today, the strong name of the Trinity.”
Then this:
“Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me.
Christ before me, Christ beside me,
Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.” - Forever
Romans 8:38-39
- Goodness = God giving us what we don’t merit.
- The Good Shepherd’s love says, “Welcome Home.”
Sooner or later we realize we are all mortal.- God has a plan.
Revelation 7:15-17
Revelation 21:3-5 - What sheep can leave behind?
Do I leave a trail of sadness or gladness?
Isaiah 52:7
Do I leave peace or turmoil?
Do I leave forgiveness or bitterness?
Do I leave contentment or conflict?
- God has a plan.
