CHILDREN AND HEIRS OF GOD
Galatians 4:1-20
Pastor Terry Wilcox
In Paul’s letter to the churches in southern Turkey (Galatia) he is arguing for the incredible truth of God that we are saved by grace alone. We actualize God’s forgiveness by faith, but son-ship is God’s gift!
John 3:6
John 1:12-13
If we are children of God, it is not by human effort.
- Paul supports his argument with the illustration of children and adults:
Galatians 4:3
In RSV and NEB “world” is translated “universe.” Some scholars think this is in reference to astrological beliefs.
Galatians 4:8-9
Throughout history, and certainly today, people make gods of created things, rather than worship the God of creation.
Galatians 4:9
Religion based on law is weak because, although it defines sin and convicts, it cannot give us forgiveness, nor strength to conquer sin.
It is miserable because it keeps us from the splendor of God’s amazing grace.
- Can you hear Paul’s passion and joy?
Galatians 4:6
Holy Spirit rebirth is required to understand this.
A hallmark of the ministry of the Wesley brothers was “the witness of the Holy Spirit to the believer’s hearts that they truly belonged to God.”
I John 5:11-13
In a world of confusing religious thoughts and ideas, God offers assurance that faith in Jesus is the way to eternity with God.
- Paul appeals from his heart.
Galatians 4:12-20
Some scholars call Paul the “prince of evangelists” but in these verses, you hear the aching heart of a pastor for his people who are returning to the bondage of righteousness earned by works.
Love is always the superior persuader.
