What We Need to Know About Communion

What We Need to Know About Communion
I Corinthians 11:23-29

Pastor Terry Wilcox

The Passion Translation:

23 I have handed down to you what came to me by direct revelation from the Lord himself. The same night in which he was handed over, he took bread 24 and gave thanks. Then he distributed it to the disciples and said, “Take it and eat your fill. It is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 He did the same with the cup of wine after supper and said, “This cup seals the new covenant with my blood. Drink it—and whenever you drink this, do it to remember me.”

26 Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are retelling the story, proclaiming our Lord’s death until he comes. 27 For this reason, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in the wrong spirit will be guilty of dishonoring the body and blood of the Lord. 28 So let each individual first evaluate his own attitude and only then eat the bread and drink the cup. 29 For continually eating and drinking with a wrong spirit will bring judgment upon yourself by not recognizing the body.

Although Paul’s first letter to the young church in Corinth contains corrective instructions, it also contains truth for all Christians for all time.

  1. The Lord’s Supper is .  I Corinthians 11:23
  2. The Lord’s Supper is about God’s plan for our .  I Corinthians 11:24
    Absolute holiness cannot .
    Absolute righteousness requires .
  3. The Lord’s Supper God’s new promise.  I Corinthians 11:25
A covenant is a solemn and  agreement.
  4. The Lord’s Supper salvation, evangelism, and hope.  I Corinthians 11:26
  5. The Lord’s Supper must be celebrated with the right .  I Corinthians 11:27
The Greek translated as “unworthy” in several translations means: of unequal .

This is not about the character of the worshiper, as much as it is about the conduct of worship.

The Lord’s Supper is open to all who are walking in fellowship with God and are in love and charity with their neighbors.
It is for those who repent of their sin and intend to live new lives.
It is for those who have tasted of God’s love, forgiveness, and acceptance through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is for those who are hungry for Jesus.
It is for YOU.
